"Sabrina"

I watched the '95 version of this movie (with Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond) a few months back, and did not care for it. So I was eager to watch the older one, since I love Humphrey Bogart and I love Audrey Hepburn, and thought they would fit the parts beautifully.

Well, I loved this version. It was hysterical. Humphrey Bogart is heartrending in Casablanca; here, he is hilarious. I love his line: "I wish I was dead with my back broken."

Where I felt like the '95 remake was awkward, dragging, and uncomfortable, this version was witty, energetic, and lovely. This is partly because the 90's are just so not my thing. Unfortunately, I was born in the 90's. But I try to forget that. The 50's however... Basically, if anything is not from the 20th century, it should be from the 50's if at all possible. This version had me screaming, yes, screaming with laughter, and diving for the remote to rewind scenes over again.

Audrey Hepburn was born to be in this role--she is perfect as the day-dreaming, Cinderella-esque character. The elderly Duke who took her under his wing in Paris was much preferable to the creepy Frenchman who teaches her the ways of the world in the '95 version.

Sometimes when I'm feeling blue, I look at this picture, and laugh. Just look at that head. The comparison is almost unreal.

William Holden is appropriately charming and lazy and lame as David. If a little old. And, um, his chin was definitely not my favorite.

A lot of the popular photos of Audrey are publicity shots for this movie.

I think this is one of the loveliest of the many captures of Audrey Hepburn. What a beautiful lady she was.

Portland

So a couple weeks ago me and a bunch of my 

girlfriends went downtown and bopped around at vintage stores. :-)

If you have never been to Portland... put it on your bucket list. And when you come to revel in the beauteous green city by the river, stop by my house and say 'hi'. 

OKAY?

The first vintage store we went to. It was clean and nice and not awfully expensive. Unfortunately, we didn't find much that appealed to us/fit/didn't make us look like weirdos.

Be still, my heart.

This was the very first thing I saw when I walked in the door.

"I AM BUYING THESE," says I.

(looks at price-tag)

"Uh, scratch that, guys, actually I'm not."

Have I mentioned that vintage shoes never fit my feet? ;-( 

AHH!

Cute black dress that looked way better on Lindsey than it did on me... 

AND the ah-mazing champagne 50's dress that Beka ended up buying.

We went to another vintage store, Ray's Ragtime, which had lots of 50's yumminess, but the employees.
MY WORD.
You'd think that people who you are giving money to would be gracious, right?
This is generally considered appropriate.
Apparently this place didn't get the memo.

One of the things they were super rude about was telling us that NO PHOTOGRAPHY WAS ALLOWED.
That is like the pet peeve of my life. No photography. GRR.
Anyways, that was too bad, since we tried on a lot of really adorable dresses.
Against our principles, we did buy two dresses from them... they did have good stuff.

Then we went down on the waterfront and I got to use 

my brand-spanking-new camera on my beautiful friends. :-)

1930's dress

30's fashion is something I haven't really seen much of. 

So I Googled it and found this lovely dress. (here) 

I'm not sure about the floral pattern, 

but I think the color and the cut is beautiful!

Drooling over vintage clothing...

When we were at the beach last week (the sixth and last time for the summer), 

I checked out a kinda grungy-looking vintage shop. 

Because I've never ever been in a vintage store. 

And I love vintage! Problem? Yes.

I went in, even though it was called Garbo's Vintage.

And amongst the saggy baggy worn-out junk,

and the outdated weird dresses,

and the horrific 70's stuff,

and the lame guys' clothes...

There were treasures.

I found several lacy 50's dresses... the white one pictured above was... too small.

But the boot made me happy.

A couple cute outfits... how do ya like the fuzzy white hat? 

Sorta unsettling.

Darling blue heels... of course they were too small. 

What is up with vintage people being so stinkin' small??

I tried on this lovely wedding dress. It fit...as long as breathing was unnecessary.

Which it was.

But I would have bought it and worn it by any means possible...if it hadn't been $200.  

I left part of my soul in that shop, and I'm gonna have to go back to collect it.

Love this.

ModCloth

ModCloth is a cool place. Basically everything is retro-inspired, and while some if it is quite ugly and/or immodest, some of it is super cute! A few of the dresses below would be too short for me, but some of them I would totally wear.

The collar on the navy blue dress is to die for.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

So this movie. I have very mixed feelings about it. 

In ways, I absolutely adored it. It spoke to my soul. Made me weep. Stuff like that. Similar to Alice in Wonderland, in that regard, actually. 

Something that was kinda freaky about it was that the two main characters, Delysia and Miss Pettigrew, were so much like me and my sister Bethany. Seriously. It was eerie. Miss Pettigrew even married the guy that has been Bethany's primary hero for years. However, if you have watched this movie, please note that I would NOT do what Delysia does in the first part of the movie.

...Which brings me to the reason I can't utterly adore and recommend this movie. There was offensive stuff, and although it was portrayed as bad... it was still offensive.

Another reason I love this movie is NAMELY THAT I LOVE THIS GUY SO MUCH.

He didn't get lots of screen time, but they did a really good job of making him very likable and wreaking havoc whenever he did that heartbreaking sad face, causing audiences to weep and wail. Or maybe that was just me.

Anyway.

Another awesome thing was the time period. I love 40's fashion, and there were some lovely outfits in this movie.

This look! Bethany would totally do this. The whole wary/stand-offish/uncomfortable thing.

Miss Pettigrew was so, so sweet.

Delysia was so, so foolish at times, but she definitely was likable.

This scene. Definitely on my top 10 movie scenes. :-)

I love vintage clothing, especially from the 40's and 50's. The feminine silhouettes that were in fashion then are just lovely. I really don't care for the majority of the earlier 1900's, or the last half. But the 50's were just awesome. :-)

I think I like the fitted waist and full skirt look best when a belt is added. Especially for gals nowadays, who don't have two-inch rib cages, and such perfect waist definition. :-)

I love this dress! The sleeves are rather unusual, but quite pretty, and I just love the ribbon at the waist, the neckline, and the skirt.
