The Young Victoria

Okay, prepare for lots of pictures. :-)

I watched "The Young Victoria" last week (while frantically trying to finish my bridesmaid's dress.. more on that another time), and liked it very much. After being very disappointed in a new-release costume drama a few weeks ago, (Bright Star... I didn't like it at all), I was pleasantly surprised to like this one more than I expected to.

I wasn't sure I would like it because I am very devoted to the 2001 BBC version of "Victoria and Albert" with Victoria Hamilton and Jonathan Firth. But this new movie focused on just a few years of Victoria's life, and did a good job. It is only 1 hour and 35 minutes, and I wish it was longer, because they could have done more justice to parts of it.

I loved how Victoria realized she needs Albert, and that she isn't doing so well being all self-dependent. There was one especially good scene after they are married when she is trying to push him around, using her authority as the queen, and Albert will have none of it.

I loved Albert.

His coat... and his hair...

I like this neckline. Most of her dresses were quite decent, which isn't always the case in costume dramas.

Yummy red coat...

I wish they used some of the screen time taken up with kissing for more plot development. :P There weren't any skip scenes, but some kind of awkward ones.

Hooray for polka dots!

This was a lovely emerald green dress. And his hair!

Dress--yes. Hair--no.

Purple dress with flowers for decoration--beautiful!

I guess they were being historically accurate with her hair. I can see no other reason for them making it so ugly some of the time. Middle part + hair hanging over ears + weird loopy things + freaky knot on top of head = disturbing. However, there were some lovely hairstyles.

I would definitely wear this yellow dress.

But NOT this crown. Gack.

Anyway, I definitely recommend it! If you've seen it, what did you think?

  2. I liked it, but it wasn't my favorite.

Agree with your comments....hair really not that great for her face. Rupert Friend is a good actor and made a great Albert. It's nice to see him in something where he is actually good!

Of course the older Victoria and Albert will always be the best...perfect. Sigh...

  3. Oooh, I've been wanting to see this!
Ugh, hair from that time period for whatever reason is perfectly hideous. Most of the time. Like the hair in Wives and Daughters? Ick.
Heh heh. I agree. I like Albert's hair. He looks very sweet. :)
    good post! :)

  4. I saw this recently too - I thought it was a good portrayal of her relationship with Albert and how she realized that she needed him in order to be stronger. Also, the politics that went on --- golly!

  6. This movie is one of my all-time favorites. Next to Tangled. ;) I don't know very much about Victoria and Albert, but one of the things I liked about the movie was that it made me want to find out more. So, next time I go to the library I want to get some biographies. Plus, I love how Albert was devoted to her, even when she was trying to be Miss Smartypants. Great guy, that. ;)

  7. I felt it was a beautiful movie, from the costumes, to the plot, to the music. I really enjoyed that they didn't end it like a "happily ever after" sort of idea, but showed their fights and that Albert was dedicated to taking care of and protecting her even when she was set on being offended. I'm glad a friend of mine, mentioned this.

  8. Hahaha, nice commentary :) I hardly remember this movie...though I did see it. A really good, but extremely long, movie series about Victoria is Edward the King. It's rather old and there aren't any cute guys, but I do think it was historically accurate and though it's about Edward, it has a lot of Victoria in it because it's about Edward (her son) as he grows up and the show goes up to the point where he becomes king - aka Victoria dies - and then ends. Anyway, nice review :D

  10. I had to rephrase my comment... (so I deleted it)
    Anyway...
This this is kind of weird... I just randomly visited your blog and then commented on an old blog post of yours. Sorry, I am random like that.

  11. I'm not crazy about either of the state crowns of Great Britain - and apparently they're both ridiculously heavy. So much so that the Queen had to practise wearing hers for two weeks before the coronation!
